Find the Right Car Insurance Policy With These Tips

January 28, 2012 at 4:24 PM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

Car insurance is necessary if you plan to drive on public roads. Car insurance is a specific type of insurance which is used to protect you against theft or the costs incurred from an automobile accident.

It seems as though there are a million and one different insurance companies and policies to choose from, so the process of actually purchasing insurance can certainly be confusing. Especially for first-time buyers, it may cause you to become frazzled and frustrated. However, with a few important pointers in mind, you should have no problem finding the right auto insurance policy for your budget and your needs.

The first step is in considering the details. The basic deciding factors for what you pay for auto insurance include your age, driving experience, driving history, and the make and model of car you own. The younger you are, typically the more you will pay because of the less driving experience you have.

If you have a bad driving history, your rates are likely going to be higher than someone with a better track record. Basically, the more reliable and safe of a driver you are, the less you pay for insurance. If you have a tarnished record and have major accident reports showing on your driving history, you may find it difficult getting approved for a reasonably priced insurance policy.

One step you cannot forget when trying to find a car insurance policy is to get quotes from the different companies and compare these against one another. Keep in mind companies are always offering different discounts and deals, but some of these may only be promotions. In other words, you may receive a discount for signing up with a particular auto insurance company, but it may only be a one-time deal or it may expire after a specific amount of time.

Many insurance companies offer a three month discount when you sign up for a policy, but you do have to be aware that you are going to end up paying more after that. Keep this in mind when comparing between auto insurance companies, because one may be less expensive to begin with but actually may end up costing you more in the long run.

Finding the right insurance company can seem difficult but by taking time to search and do your homework, you are going to be making the best investment. No one wants to constantly switch around from one insurance provider to the next, as this is only going to cause you more stress and hassle. Instead, take the time to find the right company the first time around so you can find a company to stick with for the long term.

Are We There Yet? Parents And Peaceful Journeys

January 28, 2012 at 1:48 PM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

With the summer holidays seeming like an eternity for some parents, car insurance firms have revealed that mums and dads will fork out hundreds to keep their little darlings quiet on a long car journey.

Insurers estimated that parents could spend as much as £800 on the latest in-car entertainment to keep their children occupied during the long drive this summer.

Just a few examples of the technological goodies parents may find themselves buying consist of story CD’s, iPods and DVD players, in a bid to keep the journey a smooth one.

However, such spending can add up to more than £500 for one child and can rise to as much as £781.59 for two children. This is before any money is spent on the actual holiday or day out.

Expensive run

Richard Pennant-Jones, head of car insurance at the company who held the study said: “Setting off on holiday or day trips out is an exciting time, but the cost to keep kids entertained on long car journeys can mean expensive items are at risk from being left unattended in the car.

“We are urging parents to keep their belongings safe this summer and out of sight from opportunistic thieves. This includes even short periods of time such as stops at service stations.

“In hot weather it can be tempting to leave windows open when you’re away from the car, but people should be aware that this can invalidate cover on their car insurance policy. To ensure you are protected, windows, doors and the car boot must be locked at all times, and all valuables should be concealed in the glove box or boot.

“We recommend that everyone checks their home contents and car insurance policies before they set off this summer to be clear what personal possessions are covered automatically and whether extra covered is needed. By taking time to do these simple checks you could end up saving yourself money in the long run.”

Traditional games

Despite parents worrying how to keep their children entertained in the car and purchasing hi-tech gadgets to win their silence, research has shown that children actually prefer traditional car journey games.

A survey of over 2,000 adults found 58% played I-spy with their sons and daughters on lengthy car journeys compared to only 46% whose kids played computer games.

It means the game is not as popular as it used to be, with 65% admitting they used to play the observational game when they were young, but it is once again the most popular activity. In addition to this, three in ten children today read (28%) and 22% do colouring or drawing.

Jennifer Culley, from a financial firm said: “We all have memories of those long car journeys in the summer holidays and how the monotony was broken with a game of ‘I-spy’ or who could spot the most red cars.

“It’s great to see some of these games have withstood the test of time and are still popular even with the advent of hand held games consoles, DVD and MP3 players.”

Auto Insurance for Teenagers – Ten Tips to Reduce the Cost

January 26, 2012 at 10:47 AM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

Let’s face it – auto insurance for teenagers and drivers under 25 is going to be more expensive than it is for older drivers. Insurance is all about risk, and insurance companies know that teenagers and students are a high risk group. Because they are inexperienced and sometimes careless, they tend to have more accidents and make more claims. You have to pay for the mistakes of others in your peer group! Typical prices are 2.5 to 3.5 times the base rate depending upon where you live and whether you are male or female. The average cost of auto insurance for teens could be around $290 per month for a 16 year old female, and more for a male.

But, there is good news – here are some things that you can do to make sure you do not pay too much.

About the car:

  1. Choose you car wisely – flashy cars are going to be much more expensive to insure and are also more likely to get stolen.
  2. Go for older cars with safety and security features because they are cheaper to insure.

About You:

  1. See if you can be added to your parents policy as a named driver – their premium will go up, but maybe not as much as if you get your own policy
  2. Ask for a discount if you are a good student – some companies give discounts if you are getting B grades or better.
  3. Take an approved drivers education course – it may cost to do it but you could get the money back in reduced insurance costs by up to 15%, and you also benefit from being a safer driver.
  4. Keep out of trouble on the road – no speeding, traffic violations, accidents or DUIs (Driving Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs). A good record will reduce your bill.

About the policy:

  1. Consider increasing your deductible amount if you can afford it – this is the amount you have to pay if you make a claim. If you can afford to increase it to say $1000 that can dramatically reduce your premium.
  2. Choose a comfortable level of protection against collision damage and theft so you can stay on the road if the worst happens. You can reduce your premium by not including them in your policy.
  3. As a last resort, you could take out only the legal minimum basic liability protection – but be aware that you and your vehicle would not be covered if you have an accident. Also, there will be a limit on the amount the insurance company will pay out if you cause an accident, so this could be very expensive in the long run.
  4. Get on-line quotes from at least five companies in your state – shopping around will ensure the best value, but make sure you compare like for like and not just the headline rates.

After buying your car, the next most expensive item is the auto insurance. For teens, this may be almost as much as the vehicle itself, so it pays to choose your policy wisely.

Buying New York Car Insurance

January 25, 2012 at 2:39 PM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

New York has its own regulations and expectations when it comes to car insurance. It is advisable therefore to get insured with organizations which make sure that you have the correct insurance for your individual situation.

As with other States, insurance is a legal requirement in New York and not just an option that you can take up if you fancy it. This is good for the driving population as a whole because it means that drivers who have accidents can expect to gain the compensation that they want. This is not the case when uninsured drivers are involved.

In order to make sure that drivers are insured there are a number of checks that take place. If you are involved in an accident or stopped by law enforcement officers you will be asked to show proof of insurance. As well as this, the Department of Motor Vehicles is informed of all cancellations or non renewals of motor insurance. The consequences of driving without insurance are that you will end up with a large fine and you may also get your vehicle registration and driver license suspended.

New York uses a no fault system, which basically means that your insurance company will pay up after an accident no matter who was to blame for the accident in the first place. This prevents serious arguments and cases having to be proved in courts before anybody sees a cent in compensation.

In New York there are legal minimum requirements for the car insurance that you obtain. In the case of bodily injury liability, you must have a minimum of $25 000 cover for each person involved with a maximum liability of $50 000 for the total cover. You must also have $10 000 property damage liability. These figures vary for each state in the USA and are often quoted in the common format of 25/50/10. Keeping your insurance to these minimum levels can still lead to problems. If only 2 people are injured then each will receive the minimum of $25 000. However, if more people are injured then each person will try to claim their $25 000. In this case only the first applicants get their money leaving the rest with nothing. This could lead to you being sued by the remaining people, if the accident can in fact be proved to be your fault. As a result of this car owner’s often make sure that their insurance cover is above the legal minimum requirements.

Good auto insurance doesn’t just involve getting it at the cheapest price that you can. You should also consider the service provided by the company itself. You need to be sure that the company has a good reputation in customer service. This will mean that claims should be dealt with quickly and efficiently. There is nothing worse than suffering an accident and then having to wait long periods for compensation. This could stop you paying medical bills or getting your car repaired or replaced.

There are various addition products that you can opt for. These are not legally required but can make life a little easier. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) will cover the medical expenses of you and your passengers, if you are involved in an accident. You can also get cover for uninsured or under insured motorists. These cases can be problematic and without this type of insurance you could end up with no compensation, little compensation or a court case to deal with. Neither of these are the sort things that you want to deal with just after you have been involved in a traumatic experience.

The important thing to do, as far as getting car insurance in New York, is to make sure that you shop around. There are lots of different companies out there and they are all trying to get your custom. This means that they will have offers on at various times in the year and so you should look out for these. Most insurance companies seem to rely on the lack of consumer effort factor when it comes to their regular customers. This means that they don’t pass these special offers onto their existing customers. Sometimes existing customers get a worse deal the longer that they stay with a particular company. You should try and look for offers on each yearly renewal date. The easiest way to do this is to use the internet. You can quickly fill in an online form and get a quote in a few minutes. Comparing these quotes will get you the good deal that you are looking for. Using a broker can be costly because they add on their own commission to the price of the insurance. You may like the personal contact with the broker but it can be costly.

Use Auto Insurance Rate Comparison to Save Money

January 25, 2012 at 10:04 AM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

Whether you are buying basic liability or comprehensive insurance, you need to get insured by a reliable company that will not take you round in circles when you make a claim. You need a company that will provide you with adequate insurance at affordable rates and quality service. For this, you will need to compare several insurance companies.

Some companies can charge as high as $400 a month for basic cover. By shopping for auto insurance online, you will be able to save a good percentage of money.

It is preferable to use auto insurance rate comparison websites as opposed to individual company websites. One such site will give you at least 5 different quotes to compare in just a few minutes. So if you use several comparison sites, you get more quotes to compare.

With the most basic auto insurance rate comparison, you can notice a difference of at least $100 if you compare the quotes you are getting with the offline $400 a month offer we mentioned earlier. If you do a more thorough search, you will be able to see a sharper decrease.

Factor in other important things like one’s driving experience and record, mileage, area of residence and car usage among other influencing factors, and you get an even more accurate quote. Although a thorough search will take longer, it is worth the time because only then will you be able to get the lowest quotes.

Still using the $400 dollar example and assuming you finally get a quote for $120 a month, you get to save $280 a month. In a year, that is $3360 saved! This is a massive amount that you could have given to an insurer. Do not undermine the power of auto insurance rate comparison. Compare quotes before calling your insurer to renew your policy; you might just find something that will make you change your mind.

PA Auto Insurance Rate

January 24, 2012 at 12:14 AM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

Have you ever wondered how an insurance company comes up with a specific amount when it comes to your auto insurance rates? Well, there are many different things that determine how much your insurance rate would be. The PA automobile insurance industry is just like the others in this sense. They take numerous things into consideration before they give you an amount. To help you understand things better, here are a few of those important factors that determine your PA auto insurance rate.

1. Your place of residence – You might not think much of it but it is actually one of the most determinants taken into consideration when it comes to your automobile insurance rate. If you happen to live in a rural community, chances are, you wouldn’t have to pay a lot for your car insurance because your location is what companies consider to be low risk. Basically, the likelihood of an accident happening or your car getting stolen is low. However, if you live in a bustling metropolis then you’re likely to pay a whole lot more every single month. The reason for this is the fact that your neighborhood is considered to be high risk thus increasing your premium.

2. Your gender and age – This is one of the most important determinants that can significantly contribute to your insurance rate. If you are a teenager who has just learned how to drive then expect high insurance rates. Why? The reasoning behind this is simple. You are still considered to be a high risk driver therefore, you are given higher rates. These get lower as you reach middle age and would eventually rise again when you become a senior citizen. As for gender, women generally get better rates when compared to men as they are less likely to get into accident when compared to the latter. Yes, it does sound a little unfair but do keep in mind that much research has been done to get to this conclusion. Needless to say, if you’re a man, you’re likely to get higher rates.

3. The kind of vehicle you own and the year it was made. This is the most commonly used determinant for insurance rates. Basically, insurance companies get a list of the top 100 list of cars that have the highest amount of injuries after an accident. The cars that are included in this list would likely be given a higher insurance rate since they are considered to be a risk to the insurance company itself. But it isn’t just these cars that could get you a higher rate than usual. If you own a luxury vehicle or a sports car then you are bound to get the same type of deal as well. Needless to say, the riskier your car is whether it’s getting into an accident or theft, you will get a higher rate.

So there you have it, just a few of the factors that can affect your PA auto insurance rate. Remember, if you prove yourself to be a low risk client then you might get a better deal from your insurance company. Good luck!

More about Insurance in California

January 23, 2012 at 2:10 PM • Posted in auto insurance reviewsNo comments yet

Now is the time to look a little more closely at an option overseen by the California Department of Insurance.

First, what is the problem with the range of insurance policies on offer from the insurance industry? Why is it necessary for the Department of Insurance to intervene in the market? The answer is simple. California has been hit hard by the recession. Gone are the days when people were proud to live in the “Golden State”. The problem is seen most obviously in the repeated failures of the state to deal with its massive deficit. Now translate this into the millions of people living in the state who cannot find work paying enough money to live on. Their poverty means it is impossible to pay for insurance and eat. Not surprisingly, millions of drivers are on the roads without insurance. In 2008, the Department of Insurance estimated about 18% of Californian drivers were uninsured. Since then, the unemployment rate has doubled.

Why is this a problem? Well, although many drivers buy uninsured or underinsured cover, you have to be able to identify the other driver in the accident. If you cannot, say because it’s a hit-and-run, you cannot show the other driver was uninsured and so cannot claim on the policy. Since most uninsured drivers prefer not to wait around to admit their criminal offense (that costs them a fine and may result in their vehicle being impounded), all that can, drive away from the scene of the accident as quickly as possible. That is bad luck for you and great news for the insurers who take your premium and rarely have to pay out.

The Department of Insurance believed there were a hard core of the poor who felt guilty about driving without California auto insurance so, in 2007, it persuaded the private insurance industry to offer a low-cost liability program for about $400 per year. This is not subsidised by the taxpayers. To qualify, you have to go through a means test, i.e. you must:

* be at least 19 years old;
* have held a valid driving licence for at least three years;
* have no recent claims involving injury or death;
* own a vehicle worth less than $20,000; and
* earn less than $55,125 for a family of four or $27,075 as a single person.

The premium buys you auto insurance for personal injuries up to $10,000, with $20,000 total injury claims from any one accident, and $3,000 for property damage. This is really basic coverage, but it’s a lot cheaper than the fine for not carrying insurance and avoids your vehicle being impounded. So look at the conditions. If you qualify, look at the renewal notice from your current insurer and check out what the online insurers are offering. Now decide whether you are prepared to accept this cheap car insurance to stay legal on the road. There is a clear explanation of the program on the Department of Insurance’s website at California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program. This may be the time when some car insurance is better than no car insurance.
